When I was growing up, we lived next door to the sweetest lady. We all called her Grandma Della. She really was like a grandma to all nine of us crazy Nelson kids. It was such a shock to me to grow upwards and learn she wasn't really my Grandma by relation. Just a great neighbor and family friend that all the states kids adopted to be a grandma. And it wasn't just our family that were her adopted Grandkids. She was known as Grandma Della past all the kids in our little community.

One of my favorite memories every bit a kid was ever visiting Grandma Della. She ever had the best stories to tell, and delicious treats! The 1 care for she was near known for in our entire community was her old fashioned Vinegar taffy. I'one thousand telling you lot this vinegar taffy recipe was famous!

Grandma Della passed away a number of years ago. She has been greatly missed. She left backside such an amazing legacy with her kindness, honey and compassion. It is amazing how one can impact so many and make such a powerful touch on on their lives. And she was definitely one of those women who impacted and then many for proficient.

Information technology amazes me how a unproblematic flavor can bring dorsum a flood of memories. The last time I was habitation visiting, I went through my Mom's recipe cupboards to find some of my favorite recipes from growing up and I stumbled upon Grandma Della'southward Quondam Fashioned Vinegar Taffy recipe. Set up the sugar, foam of tartar, vinegar and table salt in a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Boil until it reaches the hard brawl stage (250 degrees F). Remove from the heat and and so add in the butter.

And then you will spray a dish with a petty coconut oil or lightly grease it. Just so information technology doesn't stick to the plate/dish. And cascade in the taffy mixture. And so allow information technology to cool until you tin can manipulate it with your hands without information technology burning.

Next is the part that begins to bring dorsum the memories. The taffy pulling!

Launder your hands well. Then lightly butter them to preclude the taffy from sticking.

I fix a station for each kid and pulled off a smaller section of the taffy for them each to pull.

Then y'all start pulling the taffy.

Pull from the center out. And so put the ends together and pull from the enter out again.

Just go along pulling. Only go along Pulling (I think y'all tin think up a song for this phrase right?)

Pull the taffy until it is lite in color and stiff. The whiter the better. This could take anywhere from 15 minutes to lx minutes depending on how many people you have pulling the taffy and how much you each are working with.

This was a nifty activity with the kids, equally I gave each one their ain little section to pull. As nosotros pulled we talked and I told them stories about Grandma Della and the history of the Old Fashioned Vinegar Taffy and what it has meant to our family.

Adjacent shape into a nice long rope. And cut with greased scissors into 1″ pieces.

Then wrap up in wax paper.

As nosotros pulled, the memories of sitting in Grandma Della's kitchen helping her to pull taffy every bit she told stories of when she was a petty girl came flooding back to me in such a blitz. I could call back the smells, the sounds, the colors. I could recall the love emanating from Grandma Della.

And and then when I tasted my outset bite of Grandma Della's Vinegar Taffy, it was like I was transported back in fourth dimension. It's astonishing what a footling flavor associated with great memories can do.

And while mine doesn't look equally beautiful as Grandma Della's vinegar taffy did (she has years more exercise getting it to look just right) the flavor was exactly the aforementioned! And I may have been a bit emotional for the duration. But it was so worth it, having that piddling slice of Grandma Della back in my life again.
